...but I DON'T!!!
Published on January 17, 2006 By Thomas Thomassen In Personal Computing
In Firefox 1.5 under the Tools menu, one of the items is "Read Mail". However, mine says "Read Mail (3 New)". I click it and it opens Thunderbird which is my email client, but there is no new email there. Does anyone know why Firefox just randomly claim I got new email?

All I could suggest is doing a clean "Reinstallation" of FF... I have the same set-up running with no issues...FF 1.5 and Thunderbird...

Don't feel bad. Mine says I have 233 new emails. Maybe it's because I don't use Thunderbird?

When I was using 1.0, it said I had 1 email, did a clean install of 1.5, says the same thing. It's probably postage due anyhow!

So,.. basically,... this is some evil trickery designed to make us inspect every little bit in the computer to find these alleged unread emails? hmpfh! ... or perhaps it's a puzzle! With a secret price to whoever solves it! ah ha!

Try this:
Exit Thunderbird.
Go to Documents and Settings\UserName\Application Data\Thunderbird\Profiles\apI60ezk.default\Mail\The name of your account\ and delite "inbox.msf"

Do not delete the file just named inbox (with no filename extension), as it contains your messages.

Then restart Thunderbird. It will analyze your message file and rebuild the index file from your existing messages, which might take a while if you have a large number of messages in the folder.

Hope this will help.

However, I got rid of the same problem when I delited Outlook Express.
